“When we plan a trip, it’s so easy to focus on getting the right hotel, tour excursion, booking your best flight options or itineraries. But what happens if something goes wrong?” —Mary Carey, co-host of Rudy Maxa’s World with The Careys

CSA Travel Protection’s Vice President of Operations, Bob Chambers, explains why travel insurance should be an important consideration for all travelers and gives some tips for purchasing travel insurance, as a guest on the Rudy Maxa’s World with The Careys radio show.

Chambers suggests that the first thing travelers should ask themselves when considering travel insurance is: “What are the prepaid, nonrefundable payments that are at risk for my trip?” Take into account flights, cruises, accommodations, tours, entertainment and other trip costs that could be lost if you’re prevented from taking your trip.

Here are some other key tips and quotes from the interview:

  • “One of the things people need to look at is the investment they have in their vacation or trip. For a lot of people it can be the third biggest investment after their house and car. They wouldn’t leave those investments unprotected and it’s important to do the same thing for their vacation as well.”
  • “Some people may think I don’t need it or it’s too expensive. I see, almost every day, examples of people that are paid tens of thousands of dollars for the relatively small cost of travel insurance, who would have been out pocket and just lost that money if they didn’t have the insurance.”
  • “If you have concerns about pre-existing medical conditions, you need to be very aware of the timeframe in which you purchase insurance… Start shopping for insurance as soon as you start making travel plans.”
